PILA modules
Assessing learning and thinking skills
Explore the Platform for Innovative Learning Assessments (PILA) modules designed by our team of leading experts in learning sciences and technology, and tested by teachers. All PILA modules collect data on students’ development of 21st Century competences while engaging in meaningful learning experiences. Assessment and learning occur simultaneously.
Computational Problem Solving
This module assesses students’ ability to develop structured, step-by-step solutions to problems.
View moduleSystems Thinking
Coming in 2022 - This module will assess students’ ability to understand and model how complex systems work.

Teachers: Four simple steps to support learning with PILA
1
Prepare
Teachers select expert-designed assessment experiences or build their own using PILA customisation tools to assign as classwork to their students. They consult material co-developed by experts and teachers explaining how PILA connects with curricular topics and learning targets.

2
Engage
Students work through the assessment experience, demonstrating what they already know and can do, while also learning new concepts and practicing both disciplinary and transversal thinking skills. Teachers can monitor their students’ work in real-time to provide immediate support.

Reflect
At the end of each session, both teachers and students can access a performance summary dashboard. Teachers will have the option to replay student’s work and monitor progress.

4
Respond
Teachers can review and discuss with the class common mistakes and provide examples of effective strategies. Teachers can also provide follow-up instruction on a class and/or individual basis, assign additional PILA tasks as homework, and plan another assessment to monitor students’ progress over time.

PILA is a not-for-profit, international collaboration project managed by the OECD that provides free and wide access to open, engaging and customisable assessments of 21st Century competences.
By pushing assessment beyond multiple choice/short answers and into more immersive formats, PILA hopes to expand the breadth and depth of insight that can be gained on what students know and how they learn.
These new insights can help improve how students are assessed around the world and can inform the development of international assessment programs like PISA.
