How PILA contributes to shaping the future of assessment
PILA promotes knowledge sharing and experimentation to generate more valid and useful assessments of complex skills. As the community of developers and users of PILA grows, we will be able to delve into a number of important questions, such as:
· What are important competences for which we need new assessments, and how can we design assessments to accurately measure them?
PILA will be used to pilot new ideas for assessing complex, 21st Century competences, including considerations on task design, use of digital tools and implementation of scaffolds to collect the necessary evidence on students’ mastery of these competences. Some of these ideas will be further developed for large-scale international assessments such as PISA, as well as for national assessments. PILA will provide a space where teachers, assessment experts, technology designers and policymakers can exchange perspectives on this important question.
· How can we design digital assessments for use in the classroom?
The PILA modules invite learners to conduct experimental work, handle large quantities of information and data, play with ideas, and build creative solutions to problems. By monitoring students’ work on these activities and reflecting on detailed performance reports, teachers can better understand their students’ strengths and weakness and adapt everyday instruction. The experience of teachers working with PILA will tell us more on how digital tools are best integrated in the curriculum, and what teachers need in order to make the best use of them.
· How can big data from formative learning platforms inform policy decisions and students’ own choices?
PILA and similar systems that blend learning and assessment have the potential to generate large quantities of data that can be used to design and measure the impact of educational interventions, identify at-risk students or provide guidance to students in their educational choices. By engaging with policymakers and public institutions around the world, PILA can contribute to the discussion on appropriate uses of big data in education.
